What It Is
Laughing gas is the common name for nitrous oxide (N₂O), a colorless, sweet-smelling gas used in dentistry for its sedative and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. Despite the name, it doesn’t always make people laugh—though it can cause a light, euphoric feeling.
It’s considered a mild sedative and is often referred to as conscious sedation because patients remain awake, responsive, and able to follow instructions.
How It’s Used
- Administration: Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask that fits over your nose.
- Inhalation: You breathe a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The dentist controls the amount of gas.
- Effect Onset: The effects begin within 2–3 minutes.
- Monitoring: Your vital signs and comfort level are monitored throughout.
- Post-Use: After the procedure, the dentist will switch to 100% oxygen for a few minutes to clear the nitrous from your system.
- No injection is needed to administer laughing gas, and it wears off quickly—usually within minutes after the mask is removed.
Why It’s Used
- Dentists use laughing gas for several reasons:
- To reduce anxiety: Great for people with dental fear or phobia.
- To relieve mild to moderate pain: It dulls pain sensations.
- To increase comfort during procedures: Especially during longer or more uncomfortable treatments.
- To help patients tolerate procedures: Especially useful for those with a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty staying still.
- It doesn’t put you to sleep, but it helps you feel calm, detached, and less aware of discomfort.
When It’s Used
- Laughing gas may be used in situations like:
- Routine cleanings (for very anxious patients)
- Fillings or crowns
- Tooth extractions
- Paediatric and special-needs dentistry
It’s often chosen when:
- Patients are nervous but want to remain awake
- Quick recovery is desired (you can usually drive yourself home)
- General anaesthesia or stronger sedation isn’t necessary
- Limitations:
- The Dentist will need to do a N20 Consultation to determine if this will work in kids (above the age of 4 years) and adults.
